Position: Humanitarian Coordinator

Job ID: 3285

Location: West and Central Africa

Full/Part Time: Full-Time

Regular/Temporary: Regular

Rotation: This post is non-rotational.

Background Information:
The population of Nigeria is currently estimated at 182 million in 2014, up from 144.4 million in 2006 (NPC 2009) with about 49% women. Nigeria is therefore the most populous country in Africa and the 7th most populous country in the world. With a growth rate of 3.2%, the population is expected to double by the year 2030.

Since its independence in 1960, Nigeria has been affected by various levels of conflict and violence, which has resulted in great loss of lives and property. These conflicts have placed tremendous burdens on Nigerian communities especially women and young girls who suffer displacement, loss of livelihood and various forms of gender based violence (GBV). Currently, the Boko Haram conflict poses the biggest human security and humanitarian challenge, with women and young girls being primary victims. The conflict, which started in 2009, has affected most Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, and Gombe States in North-East Nigeria. In the latest humanitarian need overview (HNO), the humanitarian community estimated that 14.8 million people are affected in the four States, with 7 million requiring humanitarian assistance and protection. The humanitarian situation in North-East Nigeria continues to worsen and humanitarian needs remain largely unmet. Internal displacement has increased from 1.4 million in June 2015 to 2.3million in October 2015, and the HNO estimates that 3.5 million of the needy people are in un-accessible areas.

UNFPA remains in the forefront of the humanitarian response to the IDPs, host communities, and rescued women and children.
