Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will miss Argentina’s World Cup qualifying clash with Paraguay after suffering a hamstring injury in his country’s 2-0 defeat to Ecuador.
Aguero, fresh from scoring five goals in City’s 6-1 Premier League win over Newcastle on Saturday, was carried off on a stretcher after sustaining the problem to his left leg midway through the first half in Buenos Aires.
Aguero is set for a scan on the injury but he has already been ruled out of Argentina’s game with Paraguay next week.
Argentina boss Gerardo Martino told the media: “He was moving very well and causing a nuisance. We hope he recovers well, but obviously he’s a player we will lose.
City also confirmed the injury in a statement on their official website, which read: “Sergio Aguero lasted just 22 minutes of Argentina’s opening World Cup qualifier against Ecuador.
The City striker, who scored five goals in his last game against Newcastle, pulled up holding his left hamstring while chasing a long ball downfield.
Former Blue Carlos Tevez replaced Kun, who was stretchered off after receiving treatment with the game at 0-0.
Aguero, who has only just returned to fitness after a knee injury earlier in the season, must now be considered doubtful for when City resume their Premier League campaign against Bournemouth on Oct. 17.
Martino’s men struggled without Aguero as they slipped to a first defeat on home soil since 2009, with goals from Frickson Erazo and Caicedo in the space of 120 seconds giving Ecuador a famous win.
The former Barcelona boss accepted his team were below par against Ecuador.
Martino said: “It really was a bad night. Ecuador beat us, waited and hurt us. Most of our play was loose. The analysis gives us too much to talk about.
