China has revised its law on population and family planning, thereby abolishing its policy of one child per couple instituted in the 1970s.

The Asian country now allows every couple to have up to two children, starting January 1, 2016.

The new legislation on two-child policy was passed on Sunday during session of National People’s Congress the state-controlled Xinhua news agency reported.

“The state advocates that one couple shall be allowed to have two children,” the newly revised Law on Population and Family Planning states.

According to NPC, the new policy takes effect on January 1.

The policy “is a proactive response to the issue of an aging population,” the state news says.

The policy of one child per couple was implemented in the 1970s to control population growth in the world’s most populous country.
