Five gunmen held Dr Kawu Ahidjo at gun point for nearly two hours on Tuesday, four days after he petitioned the Department of State Security (DSS) about mismanagement at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.
Ahidjo, a spine surgeon, was first demoted and then fired after he accused the hospital management and vested interests of impeding his surgeries, mis-managing patients and altering patient records in attempts to cover it up.
He told Daily Trust that the gunmen overpowered guards at his private hospital on Tuesday and came for him inside with a pistol to his head.
One of the gunmen told him they "had been instructed to kill you," Ahidjo said.
You are giving some people problems, Ahidjo remembered being told.
He had also copied his petition to the House of Representatives committee on petitions and human rights and the chief of staff to the President, and "some panicked," he said.
They took all my phones, laptops, money, and my BMW X5 Jeep. Surprisingly, they took away all documents related to my problems with University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada and any documents or papers with UATH Gwagwalada logo," Ahidjo recounted.
They left all other files.
I was eventually spared because one of the gunmen who was the only one hooded kept pleading with them to spare my life. He kept telling them that I am a good doctor who does free surgery for indigent patients.
