A 26-year-old Harvard Business School graduate , Kiran Gandhi performed an incredible feat as she participated in the London Marathon, while on her period, without a sanitary pad or a tampon, bleeding freely the entire time.
She didn’t care if onlookers found it disgusting as she said, “I ran the whole marathon with my period blood running down my legs.”
Gandhi gave reasons for doing this in an interview with People Magazine, explaining that there is a shame and stigma “surrounding women’s menstrual cycles” which she hoped to shed light on and tackle with her performance at the Marathon.
Gandhi further hoped to enlighten and encourage women to end the stigma and secrecy generally associated with their menstrual cycles, by not being ashamed of the natural occurrences in their bodies.
The free bleeder also ran to raise awareness for women who have no access to sanitary products and supplies.
She said, “I ran with blood dripping down my legs for sisters who don’t have access to tampons and sisters who, despite cramping and pain, hide it away and pretend like it doesn’t exist. I ran to say, it does exist, and we overcome it every day, I felt kind of like, Yeah! F— you! I felt very empowered by that. I did.
