Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany suffered fresh injury misery on Boxing Day when he was forced to hobble off shortly after returning to action as a substitute in the home win over Sunderland.
Kompany had been out of action with a calf problem since the goalless draw with Aston Villa on November 8, but was back in the squad for the visit of the Black Cats to the Etihad Stadium.
The centre-back was named on the bench by City manager Manuel Pellegrini and entered the fray in the 62nd minute as a replacement for Nicolas Otamendi with City leading 4-1.
However, he lasted only nine minutes before suffering a recurrence of his calf injury and looked devastated as he left the pitch in the 71st minute with Martin Demichelis coming on.
City had lost three of their Premier League matches during Kompany’s absence and Pellegrini will be unhappy to lose the Belgian again after admitting in midweek how much he was missed.
You are always missing good players. He’s the captain here and, if he doesn’t play, it’s an important player we don’t have in our squad,” said Pellegrini on Wednesday.
