Good wishes poured in for Carrie Fisher, the actress who played the iconic role of Princess Leia in Star Wars, as she spent Christmas in intensive care in a Los Angeles hospital.

Fisher, 60, suffered a heart attack towards the end of a flight from London to Los Angeles on Friday.

Harrison Ford, who played her Star Wars co-star Han Solo, told the Hollywood Reporter: "I'm shocked and saddened to hear the news about my dear friend. Our thoughts are with Carrie, her family and friends.

Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, said he was "sending all our love." Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca, called her everyone's favourite princess.

Ms Fisher, 60, was rushed to hospital by paramedics shortly after her United Airlines flight landed in California.

According to the Los Angeles Times, one source said she was in a lot of distress.

She suffered a "massive heart attack" about 15 minutes before landing and people on board administered CPR, the US website TMZ reported.

Her brother, Todd Fisher, said she was receiving excellent care in hospital but that he could not classify her condition.

We have to wait and be patient," he said. "We have so little information ourselves.

He told Variety: She’s in the intensive care unit and everybody’s praying for her. There’s nothing new from the doctors. There’s nothing new at all. … There’s no good news or bad news.

Prior to landing at LAX, the pilot of the United Flight told the control tower that passengers aboard the plane were helping an unresponsive passenger, but did not name who it was.

United 935 I need the nature of your medical emergency, and also the sex of the patient and if there is medical personnel at the gate, an official from the control tower can be heard asking the pilot on the recording.

We've coordinated medical personnel for the gate, we have some passengers, nurses, assisting the ... unresponsive passenger, the pilot replied. So they're working on her right now, we're going to have them seated in about two minutes and we should hopefully be on the deck in about five.

A spokesman for United Airlines said emergency services met the flight after crew reported an unresponsive passenger. "Our thoughts are with our customer at this time," the spokesman said.

Anna Akana, an actress who was on the flight, tweeted that Ms Fisher stopped breathing for 10 minutes and that CPR was being administered until the plane arrived in Los Angeles.

She said: "Don't know how else to process this but Carrie Fisher stopped breathing on the flight home. Hope she's gonna be OK.

So many thanks to the United flight crew who jumped into action, and the awesome doctor and nurse passengers who helped.

Paramedics reportedly rushed on board when the plane landed shortly after midday local time, and the actress was taken to a nearby hospital.

Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) said firefighter paramedics aggressively treated a cardiac arrest patient at LAX at around 12.11pm on Friday.

According to TMZ, it took paramedics on the ground 15 minutes to get a pulse. The website said Ms Fisher was on a ventilator at UCLA Medical Centre, where a large gathering of media personnel was camped outside.

Among those who rushed to the hospital was Ms Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd, along with the actress' beloved French bulldog, Gary, the website reported.

One law enforcement source said that her condition was not good.

Ms Fisher had been in Europe, posting pictures on her Twitter account of her visit to Bruges.

William Shatner and Graham Norton were among a host of stars who tweeted their well-wishes to the actress.

Don't even think about it!! This planet needs you on it! Sending so much love xxx, Norton said.
