President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the appointment of Dr Abali Chuku as the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Umuahia Abia state for another four year tenure.
According to a statement issued by the hospital’s head of administration, Rowland Ekpemu, the renewal of Chuku’s appointment ‘stems from his landmark achievements, responsible and competent leadership during his first four years in office as the FMC Medical Director”.
Before Chuku’s first appointment as the Medical Director /Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Government owned hospital in 2011, he was for 15 years the head of its Ophthalmology department.
Not long after he assumed duties as the Medical Director and set into motion the process of revamping/ transforming the 327 – bed hospital that had allegedly been mismanaged, an attempt was made to assassinate him in the hospital premises during which he was shot below the abdomen and at his left arm.
He was subsequently taken to a London hospital for treatment and returned about one year after undergoing treatments involving surgeries.
Dr Chuku had his primary and secondary education in London and obtained a Medical Degree from the University of Nigeria Nsukka and thereafter obtained a fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons and Post Graduate at the Medical College of Nigeria Commending Dr. Chuku’s numerous accomplishments during his visit to the FMC, Nigeria’s immediate past Health Minister, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu commended him for “a good job done well”. His words:”Dr Chuku is innovative, he works hard to be ahead in any competition.
He is one of our best; his staff here is cooperating with him. The FMC Umuahia will remain a lasting testimonial to his good works”.
