The Medical Director of St Jude Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Auchi Dr. Jude Osayemere Omoroge, has called on the federal government not to scrap the midwifery programme, saying it contributes a lot to health care delivery in the country.
Dr. Omoroge, who stated this at the weekend in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State during an interview said the midwifery programme had greatly helped to reduce maternal mortality in the country.
With the help of the programme, the last demographic health statistics shows that maternal mortality rate is reducing.
The scheme is good because of the availability of more trained midwives. It should be improved upon, not scraped, he said, adding that it was established as one of the means of tackling maternal mortality in the country.
