The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole has said that cancer is one of the major causes of mortalities globally and his ministry is poised to reduce the number of preventable deaths by raising awareness among the general public and advocating to governments to take action against the disease.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday to mark the World Cancer Day, he said that the celebration is an initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) of which Nigeria is a member, adding that “World Cancer Day unites the world under a single theme to highlight the on-going fight against cancer.

Meanwhile, a housewife Mrs. Rasheedat Abass, who recently lost her child to cancer has resolved with courage and determination to help others avoid the painful loss of a child to the disease by sharing her experience with Nigerians.

Abass revealed this in an interview at a press conference on yesterday organised by Children With Cancer Intervention Initiative (CCII), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) to mark World Cancer Day, which is commemorated every year on February 4.

Adewole said that the 2016 World Cancer Day themed, “We Can, I Can", emphasises the need to accelerate action to push the global fight against cancer to a whole new level.
