Doctors Strike Couldnt Halt Hospital Activities on HWN STRIKE UPDATE
Doctors-Strike-Couldnt-Halt-Hospital-Activities-on-HWN-STRIKE-UPDATE
A five-day warning strike by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) press demands against remuneration injustice got underway on Wednesday but was unable to grind hospitals to a halt.

A visit to the National Hospital, Abuja which has a sizeable number of resident doctors showed consultants held their clinic consultations almost uninterrupted.

Hospital staff, from nurses and pharmacists to laboratory scientists and cashiers turned up for work, many of them unaware of the strike embarked upon by resident doctors.

Resident doctors stayed off work as directed by their national body, but many visited the hospital and some of them hung around the hospital doing nothing, it was observed.

A hospital staff aware of the strike confirmed sighting several shirt-and-tie resident doctors who milled around the hospital grounds but did nothing.

Another staff, when asked about resident doctors she worked with, said, Are they on strike? I didn’t know that.

NARD called the warning strike after it decided negotiations with government representatives about pay and residency training were unsatisfactory.

NARD president Dr Muhammad Askira told a press briefing in Abuja, There are some processes still ongoing in resolving the impasse. And efforts so far made by government has not yet met our demands with respect to doctors’ pay and residency training.

Among NARD's grievances, resident doctors at Federal hospitals including UBTH, UCH and LUTH have not been paid December salaries unlike their non-doctor counterparts, while new entry steps for house officers are yet to be implemented.

Some hospitals still bar doctors from skipping a pay grade unlike non-doctor after a court ruling allowed the practice, and arrears that have accrued from years of the practice are yet to be paid to doctors.

NARD is also aggrieved that a government committee to consider reintroduction of residency training programme is yet to take off and that its members who were "unfairly sacked are yet to be recalled.
