Dr Uche Asioma, a Consultant Pediatrician, on Monday called on Nigerians to utilise the abundant herbs and leaves that nature has bestowed in the country to achieve well being.
According to the expert, the country is blessed with diverse herbs that can be used not only for food but also as medicine to cure diseases without going outside the shores of the country.
When you look at it, it is foolhardiness on the part of our people, we look away from the things that are in our immediate environment and look down on them.
We go to other people’s countries to pay through our noses to access the same things we overlook here.
So many people go out of the country in search of wellness when they can go to their backyard and pick herbs to cook and drink and so much of our resources go to other countries thereby advancing their own economies at our detriment.
We have plants for treatment at the community level, especially now that we have an aging population and young people who actually want to be well for a long.
Food is health, we have a lot of natural products and plants that provide a lot of services like healing properties and have antioxidant effects that is beneficial to man, Asioma said.
The consultant said that apart from having enough medicinal plants, Nigeria could also boast of plants that could be used for beauty products that could be exported and generate revenue for government.
Products like shear butter, honey, coconut oil and so many other things in our environment, people come here and take them away only to sell them back to us as finished products in beautiful packages.
We should not allow what befell us concerning crude oil to befall us concerning plants, rather we should use that as a lesson to build our own market in this area.
Government should rather collaborate with the private sector so that rather than making room for capital flight that should generate revenue for the nation by utilising what we have,’ she said.
