Health workers at Federal Medical Centre Yenagoa in Bayelsa state, Nigeria during the early hours of today the 1st June, 2016 commenced an indefinite strike action as well as 7 days nationwide warning strike under the umbrella of JOHESU and AHPA.
The internal strike (indefinite strike) was as a result of the workers being paid half salary since January, 2016.
It could be recalled that two weeks ago, they went on a 3 day warning strike, stating clearly that if May 2016 salary is also half, that they will not have any other option than to commence an indefinite strike 12am 1st June, 2016.
The salary for May, 2016 was still cut half when workers received salary alert on 27th & 28th of May, 2016 respectively.
The 7 day nationwide warning strike by JOHESU and AHPA coincided with the workers strike which kicked off today.
This means that after the seven day nationwide warning strike by JOHESU and AHPA, FMC Yenagoa health workers will still continue with their indefinite strike, except the backlog of half salary (January - May, 2016) that the hospital management is owing them is being paid off.
